Story Seeds – Island Story Makers: A Collaborative Journey of Youth, Peace, and Creativity
Story Seeds – Island Story Makers, a new cross-border and international creative initiative, has been launched with the support of Dublin City Council through the Lord Mayor’s Initiative on Democracy. This ambitious project brings together children from across Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Cyprus to co-create a shared story, fostering cultural exchange, creativity, and the values of peace and collaboration.
The initiative highlights the power of storytelling as a tool for connection and understanding, empowering young people to explore their identities while building bridges across communities. By engaging youth as active participants in creative expression, the project aligns closely with Dublin City Council’s commitment to democracy, inclusivity, and innovation.
Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Ray McAdam, said, “This project captures exactly what the Lord Mayor’s Initiative on Democracy is about. It gives young people the space to listen, to imagine, to create and to understand one another across borders, cultures and communities.”
“Story Seeds shows us that democracy is not only learned in council chambers or classrooms. It is learned through conversation, through creativity, through respect and through the simple but powerful act of sharing stories.”
“By bringing children from Ireland, Northern Ireland and Cyprus together in one shared creative journey, this initiative is helping to build empathy, confidence and connection. It reminds us that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow. They are voices of hope, peace and understanding today.”
Story Seeds draws inspiration from the United Nations’ Youth, Peace and Security agenda, established under Resolution 2250, which recognises the vital role of young people in peacebuilding and conflict prevention. In Cyprus, the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP) continues to promote trust and stability between communities—principles echoed throughout this initiative.
Aleem Siddique, UNFICYP Spokesperson stated, “In Cyprus, UNFICYP’s role is to create conditions for a settlement by preventing tensions, maintaining stability across the buffer zone, and building trust among communities. UNFICYP’s commitment to the Youth, Peace and Security agenda, recognizes the indispensable role of young people as drivers of sustainable peace on the island and around the world.”
Story Seeds – Island Story Makers brings together children from four communities to collaboratively develop a four-chapter story. Each participating group of young people/children will contribute a chapter set in its local area, with characters traveling between Ireland and Cyprus, weaving together diverse cultures and experiences into one unified narrative.
The project will include:
- Facilitated Workshops: Interactive sessions led by a team of creative educators in June 2026
- Skills Share: Educators observe and adopt creative education processes to use in their classrooms.
- Story Creation: Each school writes a chapter, weaving in local landmarks, culture, and unique school features.
- Cultural Exchange: Schools share messages and questions to inspire the next chapter.
- Publication: The final story will be published as an illustrated booklet in print and digital form, preserving the children’s collaborative vision, distributed to all the young authors in October 2026.
Participants will not only develop writing and communication skills but also gain a deeper appreciation of other cultures, fostering empathy and a strong sense of global citizenship.
Colm Ó Cuanacháin, Executive Director, Fighting Words said, “Story Seeds: Island Story Makers is a testament to the power of youth voices in shaping a future rooted in peace, creativity and shared understanding. This project not only celebrates and engages the imaginations of young people in Ireland and Cyprus, but also sows the seeds of collaboration and empathy across communities. Through storytelling, we are nurturing the next generation of peacebuilders, one chapter at a time.”
The project is expected to deliver lasting benefits, including:
- Confidence and Skills: Children develop creative writing, communication, and teamwork abilities.
- Cultural Exchange: Participants learn about other communities, fostering empathy, curiosity, and a sense of global citizenship.
- Community Pride: The story highlights the unique qualities of each locality, strengthening local identity and cross-community bonds.
Story Seeds – Island Story Makers stands as a powerful example of how youth engagement, creativity, and collaboration can contribute to a more inclusive and peaceful world.
This project is a collaboration between Fighting Words, Fighting Words NI, UNFICYP (United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) and supported by Dublin City Council through the Lord Mayor’s Initiative on Democracy, reinforcing a commitment to youth engagement, creative expression, and the role of storytelling in building stronger, more connected communities.
