Irish Travel Agents Association advice for Holiday Makers travelling during heatwave
The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) are advising Irish holidaymakers travelling to Europe during the current heatwave to take extra precautions as temperatures in some popular destinations are reaching 40°C.
Key recommendations include:
- Stay hydrated by drinking bottled water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. It is not advisable to drink tap water and ice in drinks should also be avoided.
- Avoid going outside during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11am and 3pm, and plan sightseeing or outdoor activities for early morning or later in the evening.
- Use sun protection, including high-factor sunscreen and reapply it at regular intervals. Wear
a hat, sunglasses and lightweight, loose-fitting clothing – UV t-shirts if possible. Take extra care with sun protection for babies and children.
- Move to air-conditioned or shaded areas when temperatures peak.
- Limit alcohol consumption as it can contribute to dehydration.
- Monitor local weather warnings and travel updates, as extreme heat can cause transport disruptions and the temporary closure of tourist attractions.
- Check warnings on beaches and never swim where it is not permitted.
Travellers with underlying medical conditions, older people, young children, and pregnant women are encouraged to take particular care during periods of extreme heat.
Clare Dunne, CEO of the ITAA said, “In the event of extremely hot weather, be mindful that your body has to work harder to maintain its core temperature, making you more at risk to heat-related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion and sunstroke.”
“For anyone travelling in the coming days, it is also worth checking the latest travel and destination updates before departure. Remember your travel agent is there for you before, during and after your trip.”
The advice comes as much of southern and western Europe faces high temperatures, with authorities in countries such as Spain, France, Italy and Portugal issuing heat alerts and implementing emergency measures.
