Calling all Walkers to Join us on the Famous Camino de Santiago for ALONE
Walk the Camino to raise funds that will assist the charity perform vital services
Walkers are invited to join ALONE, the organisation that enables people to age well at home, from the 24th September to the 1st October, as they walk the final stretch (102km) of the Camino Portuguese in Northern Spain and raise funds to support our work.
Fundraising for ALONE, helps support the older people we work to enable them to age at home healthily and safely. Many of them need support with loneliness, isolation, frailty, illness, housing issues, energy poverty and other difficulties and we deliver 86% of the supports requested from us , and 78% of those within 21 days.
Camino de Santiago or The Way of Saint James, is a pilgrimage with people across the globe taking part. Originally it was seen as a religious pilgrimage, now people are embarking on the journey for their own reasons, for some it is still an expression of faith and for others it can be a journey of self discovery.
ALONE is walking the last 102km of the Portuguese Camino from Porrino to Santiago de Compostela (the minimum required to earn your Compostela). The central Camino Portuguese route, also known as the Portuguese Way, goes through Galicia and is easy to navigate as it is relatively flat. It is a great alternative to the more difficult Camino Frances.
Participants will spend one unforgettable week walking through stunning Galician countryside and villages while exploring fascinating historical towns and cities. For further information, pricing and what’s included, please find the full itinerary here.
Jennifer Keane, a previous participant said, “No words can truly express how wonderful the trip was. The goal was to raise money and have fun along way, what we got was so much more. The people I met will be in my life forever. The Camino is more than just walking, in a strange way, the walking is the least important part. The people you meet, the sharing of stories, the food, the laughter & the self-reflection are just as important as each step”
Martin Skelly of UWalk.ie and organisers of the walk, said, “The Camino is such a wonderful experience. You have the chance to walk in the footsteps of millions before you, all while taking in some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world. It has been great working with ALONE. It has been very rewarding to have help set up this trip with them, helping a good cause along the way.’’
Sean Moynihan, CEO of ALONE, said “We are delighted again to organise our Camino fundraising trip, it helps us raise funds while promoting the type of social atmosphere and community support, we value. For many who take part it is a once in lifetime trip, allowing them to experience the world famous route that will endure with them for the rest of their lives. While at the same time helping to raise funds to support the older people that look for our support to age at home every day.”
