Plaque Unveiled to Mark the first floodlit match at Tolka Park

Dublin City Council today marked a significant moment in the city’s sporting history with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Tolka Park, honouring the first floodlit soccer match ever played in the Republic of Ireland.

The historic match took place on 30th March 1953 at Tolka Park and represented a major milestone in the development of soccer in Ireland, introducing evening fixtures under floodlights for the first time in the capital. The innovation transformed how the game could be experienced, allowing greater access for supporters and paving the way for the modern match day atmosphere enjoyed today.

The plaque was unveiled at a special ceremony attended by members of Sam Prole’s family. Sam was owner and chairman of Drumcondra F.C. from 1953, where he introduced the floodlights to Tolka Park. Also attending were members of the Shelbourne History Committee, members of Shelbourne Football Club, the soccer community, local public representatives and residents, celebrating Tolka Park’s enduring contribution to Dublin’s sporting heritage.

Speaking at the unveiling, Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Ray McAdam said, “This plaque recognises not just a single match, but a turning point in Dublin’s sporting life. The introduction of floodlights at Tolka Park in 1953 opened the game to wider audiences and helped shape the vibrant football culture we see across our city today. It is important that we honour these moments and preserve them for future generations.”

The Lord Mayor acknowledged the presence of Sam Prole’s family at the unveiling including his grandson and great grandsons.

The decision to erect the plaque was made by the Dublin City Council Commemorations & Naming Committee, whose chair, Councillor Donna Cooney, said, “The Commemorative Plaques Scheme allows the City to formally commemorate people, places or events that have made a significant contribution to the life of Dublin. We welcome suggestions from the public for people and events to be commemorated. Full details are on the Council website. Today’s unveiling marks the 76th plaque approved under the scheme.”

The plaque proposer was David Wynne and the Shelbourne Historical Committee. Permission to erect the plaque outside Tolka Park was given by Shelbourne Football Club.
