Documentary The Swell Season now open in Irish cinemas
Wildcard Distribution are excited to give Irish audiences the chance to be captivated by the critically acclaimed documentary The Swell Season, in cinemas now.
The beautiful film directed by Nick August-Perna, Chris Dapkins and Carlo Mirabella-Davis stars the Oscar-winning Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová.
Speaking about the release, director Nick August-Perna said: “We are beyond thrilled and honoured to have Wildcard Distribution bring our film into Irish cinemas. Ireland provided a powerful setting for so many of the enduring moments in the documentary, so it is very exciting for us to come full circle and share the film with a wide audience here.”
In 2008, the world fell in love with Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová when their musical collaboration in the Irish film Once culminated in a jubilant Oscar win. As their fictional romance blurred with reality, they fell in love, recorded an album and embarked on a world tour which was documented on film.
But fuelled by two years of exhilaration, performance, and psychological turmoil, The Swell Season is much more than a music documentary. It is a volatile and intimate portrait of a romance that fractures in the face of life on the road and personal tragedy. As Glen and Markéta’s relationship unhinges, ultimately music prevails as their enduring connection.
The film has received positive reviews when it was released in the US including:
“A documentary that is every bit as intimate and disarming as the movie that made them famous…” Washington Post
”What emerges is a poignant commentary on the uneasy commingling of love and fame.” New York Times
“Sensitive doc manages to show Once duo as both blissed-out lovers and post-romance partners without over-dramatizing the transition.” Hollywood Reporter
The Swell Season is screening in selected Irish cinemas now.
