WILDCARD ANNOUNCE UPCOMING IRISH THEATRICAL RELEASES REDEMPTION OF A ROGUE, NOCTURNAL, FATHER OF CYBORGS AND CROCK OF GOLD – A FEW ROUNDS WITH SHANE MACGOWAN
Wildcard have announced a selection of their upcoming theatrical releases for UK/Ireland including the Cavan-set comedy musical REDEMPTION OF A ROGUE, UK drama NOCTURNAL, the fascinating documentary FATHER OF CYBORGS and the highly anticipated Shane MacGowan documentary CROCK OF GOLD – A FEW ROUNDS WITH SHANE MACGOWAN.
Speaking about the upcoming releases Wildcard’s Managing Director Patrick O’Neill said “It’s such a thrill to announce this incredibly diverse slate, and we can’t wait for audiences in Ireland to see these very special films, all helmed by such exciting filmmaking talent. We’re also very excited with the announcement on Friday that Irish cinemas can reopen on June 29th. We’ve been in touch with cinemas regarding Vivarium, Sea Fever and Dating Amber and giving audiences the opportunity to see these brilliant films on the big screen where they belong.”
REDEMPTION OF A ROGUE, a dark comedy musical set in Cavan, is the first feature film from the award-winning playwright Philip Doherty (Pilgrim).
The film follows Jimmy, played by Cavan native Aaron Monaghan (MAZE, Assassin’s Creed), on his road to redemption after returning to his hometown. Stuck in a Groundhog Day-like purgatory, Jimmy embarks on a sacrificial and outlandish journey to rid himself of his guilt and shame from the past, ultimately redeeming himself through love.
The eclectic cast from Irish stage and screen includes Aisling O’Mara and Kieran Roche along with comedian Kevin McGahern (Republic of Telly), the Oscar-nominated screenwriter Shane Connaughton (My Left Foot), and author Pat McCabe (The Butcher Boy, Breakfast on Pluto).
Writer-director Nathalie Biancheri makes her narrative feature debut with the relationship drama NOCTURNAL which stars Calm With Horses and Lady Macbeth star Cosmo Jarvis, Lauren Coe (The Halcyon) and Sadie Frost (Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Krays).
16-year-old schoolgirl Laurie (Lauren Coe) lives with her single mother, Jean (Sadie Frost), and one night crosses paths with Pete (Cosmo Jarvis), a 30-something commitment-phobic handyman who appears to have been watching her from afar. It’s not long before Laurie takes a shine to her older pursuer, even as Pete’s precise intent remains ambiguous.
Co-written with Olivia Waring NOCTURNAL had its world premiere at the London Film Festival in October to critical acclaim.
Wildcard will once again work with David Burke and Seán Ó Cualáin (Crash and Burn) on the fascinating documentary FATHER OF CYBORGS.
Irish neurologist Phil Kennedy made global headlines in the late 1990s for implanting wire electrodes in the brain of a ‘locked-in patient’ to control a computer cursor with their mind. Compared to Alexander Graham Bell in The Washington Post, Kennedy became known as ‘The Father of the Cyborgs’. Travelling to South America in 2014, he made further headlines when tiny electrodes were implanted inside his brain in order to continue his research.
FATHER OF CYBORGS examines the ethical quandaries of self-experimentation and a future where technology and human brains combine.
Wildcard is also set to release the upcoming Shane MacGowan documentary CROCK OF GOLD – A FEW ROUNDS WITH SHANE MACGOWAN in Ireland on behalf of Altitude Film Distribution.
Helmed by British filmmaker Julien Temple (Glastonbury, The Filth and the Fury) and produced by Johnny Depp, the film is set to show previously unseen footage of The Pogue’s legendary frontman from Temple’s own archives interspersed with specially commissioned animations.
