“The purpose of running isn’t to win a race; it’s to test the limits of the human heart” Bill Bowerman
February 2014 ALONE, the charity that provides support to older people in need, is calling on the women of Ireland to participate in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon in aid of ALONE. The charity aims to raise money to go towards the re-homing of an older person who is currently living in an unsuitable environment.
This year the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is taking place on Bank Holiday Monday, 2nd June. The course will be 10km long and the event will take place in Dublin City Centre. The Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is the biggest all female event of its kind in the World and 2014 will mark its 31st year.
Speaking about the event, CEO of ALONE Sean Moynihan said, “We are hoping that women from around Ireland will pledge their support to the elderly in our communities and run the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon to raise much needed funds for ALONE.”
“Through the years, due to sheer determination and resilience women have been the backbone of ALONE, the majority of our volunteers and donors have always been female. We hope that women will choose to run for ALONE this year as all proceeds from this race will go towards putting another older person who is currently living in unsafe or unsanitary conditions into a new home.”
As part of its Supportive Housing work ALONE provides 100 homes for older people who would otherwise be at risk of homelessness. Every ALONE home has its own front door and is warm, comfortable and maintained to an age-friendly standard. Staffs provide a range of personalised supports to ensure all residents live comfortable, fulfilling and independent lives for as long as possible.
ALONE is an independent charity that works with the 1 in 10 older people who are at risk of homelessness, are socially isolated, vulnerable or in crisis. They provide Supportive Housing, Befriending and Community Response to over 300 older people on a weekly basis, as well as a Campaigning service to highlight issues affecting older people in need.
